Joinery is funded by selling business licences, premium plugins, hosting referral fees, and premium support. Anything we charge a subscription for, you will be able to run yourself instead, and Joinery will always be free for noncommercial use. If that is ever not true of something we sell, we will say so plainly and explain why. No ads, no data harvesting, no AI training with your data. We don't want your data. Keep it :)

No. Personal self-hosting gets the complete suite, permanently, with no seat cap and no expiry. The only things behind money are two optional plugins and business use.
Running Joinery for a for-profit organisation’s operations. Individuals, households, students, schools and nonprofits are covered by the free license. A freelancer using it for their own mail is personal use; a company running it for its staff is not. Look, we're not the licensing Nazis here. If you're not sure if you need a business license, you probably don't.
No. Lifetime means lifetime updates for the install you licensed. There is no annual maintenance fee waiting a year from now.
Free personal self-hosting is permanent and unconditional, and nothing you install today can be clawed back. Beyond that, the honest answer is that we have to make money, and we're going to do that with our business licenses. If you buy a business license today, you're grandfathered forever. We may and probably will change business licensing terms in the future once we decide what is fair.
You can always pay us later, but you may never need to.
