Joinery is a self-hosted replacement for the services most people get from Google: email, calendar, files, photos, contacts. It installs on a server you own, and everything it stores stays there.
You can read every line of code. You can export all of it at any time, in formats other software understands. There is no telemetry, no vendor lock-in, and no arrangement anywhere in the design where your data is the product.
Underneath it is PHP and PostgreSQL — a proven, well-understood stack that runs happily on a cheap VPS and will still be maintainable in ten years. Your data is a folder of files and a Postgres database, which is exactly why leaving is easy.
There is more in the box than the core suite: events and registration, bookings, an AI assistant that runs on your own hardware, and paid plugins for commerce and server management. None of it is required, and none of it phones home.
Joinery is built and maintained by Jeremy Tunnell — a software developer who got tired of the trade where the price of convenient software is handing over everything you write, schedule, and photograph.
Being a solo developer is a feature, not a bug. It means opinionated design, fast iteration, and no design-by-committee. Every feature exists because it solves a real problem, not because a product manager needed to justify their headcount.
The goal is to build something sustainable and lasting — software people can rely on for years, not a startup looking for an exit.
Most software companies raise venture capital, hire fast, and optimize for growth metrics. This creates misaligned incentives — the company needs to maximize revenue, which means maximizing what they extract from customers. For a company holding your email, that is not a small problem.
Joinery has no investors to satisfy. No board of directors. No growth targets. This means every decision can be made in the interest of the people who actually use the software.
It also means the codebase stays coherent. One developer means one vision, one architectural style, and zero “we inherited this from the team that left.” Every line of code has a clear owner and a clear purpose.
The honest flip side: one person is one person. Joinery is in beta, some parts are younger than others, and this site says which. The insurance policy is the one thing a hosted service can never offer you — the software runs on your server, and it keeps running whatever happens to us.
